Advertising Opportunity

We’ve contracted Guide Book Publishing to publish a 2008 Guide Book & Directory for our congregation that will be updated and delivered to your home annually! This book will be the who, what, where, why and how of St. Andrew’s – and will be provided at no cost to the church! Local businesses are being solicited to advertise in our book, and what better place to publicize your service or product than to the community in which you worship? To find out more about advertizing in our book, please contact Emily in the parish office at (816) 523-1602, ext. 124.

Update Membership Information!

Does the parish office have YOUR family information correct? Here’s your chance to update YOUR information for our annual Guide Book & Directory. It’s time to update our database with any changes, additions or deletions that may have occurred in your family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Moved? Moving soon? New email address? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you still want your information published? If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know NOW so the information in our Guide Book & Directory is up to date! Contact Mary in the parish office by Friday, July 11, with any changes, (816) 523-1602, ext. 110. Thanks for your help!

It’s Time for “Candlelight Communion”

Please join us for a 45-minute Candlelight Communion service each Sunday evening at 5 p.m., continuing throughout the summer. Enjoy music of Taizé, accompanied by cantors and instrumentalists; extended silence for prayer and meditation; and Holy Communion. This is a perfect beginning of the new week for those seeking a peaceful respite or for those whom work or travel keeps away from church in the morning.

Summer Choir

Haven’t joined us yet?  Come on—there’s still several weeks left this summer, and besides, you have a reserved seat!! 8 a.m. liturgy: rehearse in choir room at 7:25 a.m.; 10:15 a.m. liturgy: rehearse in choir room at 9:25 a.m. (or come and sing both liturgies). Vestments and music provided. We’d love to have YOU join us! Questions? Contact Sharon Hettinger (816) 523-1602, ext. 112.

Clergy Time Away This Summer

Fr. Fred is now on his three month sabbatical study leave. First, he will be in the Black Hills of South Dakota and later in Vancouver, B.C., as he studies Native American spirituality.  Fr. John and his family have begun their three-week vacation in Great Britain. He will return to the office July 17.  Mtr. Anne also will be taking vacation time this summer: July 22-July 31 and August 16-September 1. So, despite sabbatical and vacation schedules, at least one of our priests will be in Kansas City throughout the summer.

Fr. Fred’s Notes from the Field

Fr. Fred is posting regular "Notes from the Field" during his sabbatical.  You can find these, and pictures, by clicking here.

A Plea from Episcopal Relief and Development

We have an urgent need for the Midwest flood victims--they need our help today! ERD's disaster relief funds are depleted after responding to the many disasters around the world and in the US this spring. The funds needed to respond to these growing crises in the Midwest are just not there. We need to get the word out to every Episcopalian and provide them the opportunity to respond to the needs of people affected by the devastating floods both through prayer and by giving.

Please make an immediate contribution to relive the suffering of families impacted by flooding in the Midwest. To make a donation to Episcopal Relief & Development's "Midwest Flood Fund" online by clicking here, or call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief & Development "Midwest Flood Fund" P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.

2nd Friday Film Series

Rules of Engagement - A Hero Should Never Have to Stand Alone

You are invited Friday, July 11, at 7p.m. to join us in the Jewell Room for Rules of Engagement, an exciting, suspenseful movie showing the excruciating decisions people have to make defending our country – killing or not killing, when to shoot and when not to shoot, what is national interest and what is not. They are faced with ethical choices that have higher stakes than most of us have to make. Watch this movie to gain a deep appreciation of what we personally don't have to do to defend our country but what others are doing for us and for our country.

This film tests values and presents many points of view. Come and think about what you would do in these circumstances if you were military, civilian, judge, jury or government official…. If you are or have been in the military, we especially invite you; please come and speak up on this controversial subject! The film and refreshments are free. For more information about the 2nd Fridays Film Series, click here.

Men’s Breakfast

Join the men of St. Andrew’s Saturday, July 12, from 8-9 a.m. in the Undercroft for great pancakes and sausage, fantastic fellowship, and inspiring words about how we can serve God by standing in the gap. Please RSVP to Nancy in the parish office, (816) 523-1602.

Calling all Gardeners!

If you love to garden (or even if you just like to dig in the dirt) please join the St. Andrew’s Gardening Guild on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. (after the Men’s Breakfasts which are held on the same day).  We always have an enjoyable time trimming bushes, pulling weeds, and generally improving the appearance of the St. Andrew’s grounds. If you have any questions, please contact Ralph Munyan at (816) 444-3517. We hope you can join us!

All Parish Breakfast

Due to the July 4th holiday, the July Parish Breakfast, originally scheduled for July 6, has been moved to Sunday, July 13.  Please plan to join us after the 10:15 liturgy, as the Facilities Commission provides fabulous breakfast fare prepared by students from Culinary Cornerstones. This Episcopal Community Services program helps homeless and unemployed students by providing twelve weeks of culinary arts training from Chef Jessica Bero, and then steers them toward good restaurant jobs in the community. The food will be terrific and the uplift you get from seeing Episcopal outreach in action will make it a Happy Sunday

St. Andrew’s is Really Stepping up to the Plate…

(pun totally intended!) to help out with Missionpalooza (July 22 – 27) this year!  We have taken on the responsibility to provide three meals to 100+ youth and adult volunteers during that week. Pete Barham is leading a group of men to make a wonderful breakfast that Saturday morning; and the OutReach Commission is providing great food as well for the Thursday night meal and Friday morning breakfast! The cost of food doesn’t come cheap, especially when you’re feeding an army of teens.  Please help us offset the cost of helping by making a contribution. In the Jewell Room, find our “giving tree,” and please consider making a small contribution. Three meals could easily cost over $400.

Neighbors Need our Help

Recent price increases, especially for food and gasoline, hit the poor hardest – those with the least ability to absorb higher costs.  Each week, our staff processes requests from needy neighbors looking for assistance with rent, utility bills, and food.  We provide assistance through the church’s Benevolence Fund, which is currently getting precariously low.  Please make your check payable to St. Andrew’s and put “Benevolence Fund” on the memo line.  Thank you for helping us help “the least” of Christ’s brothers and sisters.

A Huge Thank-you from Tanzania

Leah Mattonya and the women who work with her send greetings to everyone at St. Andrew's with thankful hearts for the money sent for food relief. Please check out the bulletin board in the hallway for pictures of the children who were the direct recipients of the food. The relief that was sent from St. Andrew's becomes much more real when you see pictures of those who desperately needed it.   Thank you for keeping them in your prayers.

The Simply Divine Gift Shoppe

We changed the shop this week, so come in and see what's new! God loves a cheerful buyer and so do we! Happy Sunday!

Special Note of Thanks

The families of the late Mary Ann Diehl, “KCCK Soup Kitchen Lady 1985-2001”, thank the members of St. Andrew’s Church for their expression of sympathy on her sudden death on April 3, 2008 at the University of Maryland Cancer Center from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Peace to all. George Diehl

A Special Invitation…

… from the sisters who make our communion hosts: The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration at Clyde, MO, invite single women, ages 18-40, who are considering religious life, to spend July 5-12 with them and experience monastic life. Take time away from your busy schedule to live life in a contemplative monastery, deepen your prayer life and meet others who are discerning a call to religious life. For more information, contact Sr. Ruth Starman, OSB, at 1-877-632-6665.
